Shame – is the most destructive of human emotions and causes serious damage emotionally, physically and spiritually. It has the power to control our feelings, thoughts, and behaviors. It is the very root of our low self-esteem!
Shame caused an emptiness in my soul that could NOT be filled. People around me tried to pour into my barren cavern but it only eased the pain temporarily. My deep void only began to heal when I decided to align myself with the King, the one who overcame the deepest shame in the history of mankind.
I can imagine if I lived during the time Jesus was physically on earth, He would have gotten very annoyed with me. I can easily imagine Him saying to His disciples, “Help me hide; that girl’s relentless! I just healed her yesterday and she’s back in line again today for the 28th time”. Or, He would be running down the beach away from me as I yelled, “Hug me again. I need more time. Tell me you love me again, and again”. I have goofy thoughts at times.
Thankfully, Jesus never needed to run away from people emotionally or physically because He was able to give without being sapped dry. He gave His life to help others, yet He was spat on, beaten, and rejected by those around Him – those who He had been serving. The disciples, the ones He taught daily, loved intimately, and mentored with His life, actually denied knowing Him.
Being rejected and abused by the ones who are supposed to love you the most can cause unbearable pain. This I know. How did Jesus overcome the shame after being rejected, tormented, and humiliated?
He aligned Himself with His Father. Jesus found His worth from who He belonged to. I have finally found my worth in who I belong to – Jesus.
