I’ve never thought of myself as a writer and never dreamed I’d be the author of several books. However, I’ve always needed to journal about my thoughts, memories, and feelings in order to cope with the circumstances I was enduring. By dumping my words on paper, it felt as if I could handle just a little more of the world around me. I could endure the feelings that were surfacing for a tiny bit longer and I could function for another day as long as I released a bit more of the pressure building inside.
At first, most of my words came out in poems. Who knew my history in poem writing would turn into the ability to write rap songs? Thankfully, God knew and He had a plan all along.
Jingles Lost Her Jingle came to my finger tips one night after a 10-week mission trip to Ghana. While there, I met a little girl about 3-years-old, who helped me realize my worth as a child of a true King. About a week after I returned home, I woke up at 3 am and the first chapter of the Jingles’ story flew from my finger tips faster than I could type. I was stunned as I read what was appearing on my computer screen and had no clue the divine download that night would one day help people of all ages heal after sexual abuse.
During the first few years of King’s Treasure Box existence, I thought our ministry would primarily serve female children under the age of 15. I did not feel qualified, or smart enough, to write books for adults and certainly not for the male population. I’m thankful God does not concern Himself with whether or not we are qualified.
After an inner city event, where I met two precious young boys, the realization that a book for boys is desperately needed. I then prayed and told God I was willing to write the book if He provided the words. I’m over fifty and have never listened to rap music. After writing Lil’ J Lost His Jam, I took the manuscript to several music artists who write rap lyrics. I assumed a “real artist” would need to go behind me and make the raps applicable, hip, and current.
After reading my lyrics, all four artists expressed the same sentiments: “Who wrote your lyrics? These are awesome! I can’t write anything better than what you have.” Those who know me, my inability to focus, my often severe health problems, and so many other issues fully acknowledge the existence of these books are miraculous!
One of my favorite Bible verses is James 1:12 – “Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.” I endured many trials and hardships due to the abuse, but my heavenly Father helped me persevere. I don’t know what the “crown of life” includes, but I’ve never been so happy, so at peace and so blessed as I am right now.
